Be Salt and Light

Be Salt and Light

Jesus told His followers they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, called to preserve and illuminate. Salt prevents decay; light dispels darkness. This matters because it defines the believer's role in society - not to withdraw but to positively influence it. In daily life, being salt and light means standing for what's right in your workplace, bringing hope into discouraging situations, living with integrity that makes people curious about your faith, and refusing to blend in.

Key Passages

Ye are the salt of the earth and light of the world

Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus declares believers' identity as preserving and illuminating agents - not optional roles but essential functions that define their purpose in the world.

Y13e are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

1

Salt preserves and flavors. Light illuminates and exposes. Both are useless if they lose their distinctiveness. A lamp hidden under a basket does no good.

2

The world is decaying and dark. The church is called to be the preserving and illuminating presence within it. Not by withdrawing, but by being present and different.

3

Jesus did not say we should try to become salt and light. He said we are. The question is whether we are functioning as what we already are in Christ.
