Overview
Bible Navigator is committed to your privacy. This application is designed to be used without requiring any personal information from you. We do not operate user accounts or login systems. We use basic third-party analytics (Google Analytics) to understand aggregate usage patterns, with advertising and personalization features disabled.
Data We Collect
Bible Navigator does not collect, store, or transmit personal information (such as names, email addresses, or user accounts) to our own servers. However, we do use third-party analytics to understand aggregate usage of the site.
Usage Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (provided by Google) for basic website analytics. This service collects standard usage data including:
- Pages visited, time spent on pages, and navigation patterns
- Device type, browser, operating system, screen resolution, and language
- Approximate geographic location (country or region level, derived from IP address)
- Referring site or search terms (when available)
This data helps us understand which content is most useful and how to improve the site. We have not enabled Google Signals, User-ID, remarketing audiences, demographic reporting, or any advertising features.
Google Analytics may place first-party cookies in your browser. Data collected by Google is subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not sell this data or use it to build individual user profiles.
Information We Do Not Collect
- No email addresses, names, or personal identifiers on our servers
- No user accounts or login systems
- No advertising profiles or cross-site tracking on our behalf
- No server-side session data tied to individuals
Local Storage (Browser)
Bible Navigator uses your browser's localStorage to save your preferences and reading progress locally on your device only. This data is never sent to our servers or any third party. It includes:
- Reading progress - which chapters you've read, reading plan checkboxes
- Bookmarks - chapters you've starred for quick access
- Preferences - font size, dark mode, sepia mode settings
- Reading streak - consecutive days visited
- Recently viewed - last pages visited (for the home page)
You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser's site data. No account or login is required - all data stays on your device.
Cookies
Bible Navigator itself sets no tracking cookies and no advertising cookies. The web server may set minimal technical cookies required for basic HTTP functionality. Google Analytics (used for usage statistics) may set its own first-party cookies for measurement purposes. See our Cookie Policy for full details.
Third-Party Services
Bible Navigator loads resources from the following third-party services. When your browser requests these resources, your IP address and basic request data are visible to these providers under their respective privacy policies:
- Google Analytics (Google) - Provides aggregated website usage analytics. We send standard page view and device information. No advertising features or personalized tracking are enabled. Google Privacy Policy
- unpkg.com (Cloudflare) - Serves the Leaflet.js mapping library. Cloudflare Privacy Policy
- OpenStreetMap tile servers - Provides map tiles on geography pages. OSM Privacy Policy
- New Relic (New Relic, Inc.) - Provides application performance monitoring and browser error tracking. A lightweight JavaScript agent collects page load timing, JavaScript errors, and AJAX performance data. No personal information, form inputs, or page content is captured. New Relic Privacy Policy
- xAI image generation - Used locally by the site administrator only to generate illustrations. No visitor data is sent to xAI; this service is never triggered by visitors.
Server Logs
Our hosting provider (Fly.io) and any CDN layers collect standard server access logs (IP address, request URL, timestamp, user agent, referrer) as part of normal web server operation. We also use New Relic for server-side application performance monitoring (response times, error rates, throughput). These logs and metrics are used solely for security, performance monitoring, and debugging purposes. They are not used for behavioral tracking or advertising. Logs are retained according to the hosting provider's and monitoring service's policies.
Children's Privacy
Bible Navigator does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We do not operate accounts or collect names, emails, or other identifiers from any users. Basic aggregated analytics (via Google Analytics) may be collected as described above. The site is designed to be usable by people of all ages. Parents and guardians should be aware that some biblical content includes descriptions of violence and mature themes in their historical and religious context.
Your Rights
We do not store personal data on our own servers, so there is no personal data we can directly access, correct, or delete for you. Data sent to Google Analytics is subject to Google's own data subject request processes. Your locally-stored preferences, bookmarks, and reading progress can be cleared at any time through your browser settings (Clear Site Data).
California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), California residents have specific rights regarding their personal information. Bible Navigator does not sell, share, or use personal information for targeted advertising. We do not collect personal information beyond what is described in this policy (aggregated analytics via Google Analytics). Because we do not maintain user accounts or store personal data on our servers, there is no personal information to access, delete, or correct. If you have questions about your rights under California law, contact us at [email protected].
Data Retention
We do not retain personal data on our own servers. Analytics data sent to Google is retained according to Google's data retention settings (typically 14 months for user-level data in Google Analytics, subject to change). All user preferences, bookmarks, highlights, and reading progress are stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage and remain fully under your control. These data persist until you manually clear them.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Bible Navigator after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
