Great Commission Echoes

Illustration of Great Commission Echoes

God's ancient promise to bless all nations through Abraham sets the course for his redemptive plan that unfolds across the scriptures. Isaiah's vision of the servant as a light to the Gentiles deepens this calling to reach the ends of the earth with salvation. The risen Lord echoes this purpose in his command to disciple all nations, while the Spirit at Pentecost empowers the church to fulfill it as witnesses to every corner of the world.

Key Passages

All Nations Blessed Through Abraham

Genesis 12:1-3

God's promise to bless all nations through Abraham is the Bible's first Great Commission - the missionary mandate embedded in Israel's founding covenant.

God's original promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham's seed.

N1ow the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy fatherโ€™s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

A Light to the Nations

Isaiah 49:6

Isaiah expands the mission - God's servant will be a light to the Gentiles, bringing salvation to the ends of the earth, not just to Israel.

God's servant is given as a light to the nations, that salvation may reach the ends of the earth.

A6nd he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Go and Make Disciples

Matthew 28:18-20

Jesus sends His followers to all nations with His authority - the explicit fulfillment of what was implicit in Abraham's call and Isaiah's prophecy.

The risen Jesus commissions His followers to make disciples of all nations, fulfilling the Abrahamic promise.

A18nd Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Witnesses to the Ends of the Earth

Acts 1:8

Acts traces the gospel's geographic expansion from Jerusalem outward - fulfilling Jesus' command and Abraham's promise simultaneously.

Jesus promises the Spirit's power to be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

B8ut ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
