The Good Shepherd

Illustration of The Good Shepherd

The image of God as shepherd runs through the Bible as a picture of His protective guidance and intimate care for His people, beginning with the psalm that declares the Lord leads His own beside still waters and restores their souls. Prophecies foretell how the Lord Himself will search for His scattered flock and set over them a shepherd from the line of David to feed them in justice. This finds its fulfillment when Jesus identifies Himself as the good shepherd who knows His sheep and lays down His life for them, securing their eternal redemption through His sacrifice.

Key Passages

The Lord Is My Shepherd

Psalms 23:1-6

David's beloved psalm establishes God as the personal shepherd of His people - providing, guiding, protecting, and comforting through every valley.

David's psalm of trust portrays God as the shepherd who provides, protects, and leads through dark valleys.

T1he LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his nameโ€™s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

God Will Shepherd His Flock

Ezekiel 34:11-16

Ezekiel prophesies that God Himself will come to shepherd His scattered people - a promise fulfilled when Jesus declares 'I am the good shepherd.'

God promises to personally search for His scattered sheep and shepherd them, replacing the failed leaders of Israel.

F11or thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

I Am the Good Shepherd

John 10:11-18

Jesus claims the shepherd role prophesied in Ezekiel, adding that the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep - combining tender care with ultimate sacrifice.

Jesus declares Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, fulfilling Ezekiel's prophecy.

I11 am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. 13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. 15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
