The Remnant

Illustration of The Remnant

In the scriptures God reveals his steadfast preservation of a faithful remnant amid the falling away of the many. Chosen according to grace, this remnant ensures that his promises endure through periods of judgment and dispersion, as seen when a portion returned from captivity and when the apostle affirms that he has not cast away his people. Serving as a living testimony to divine mercy, the remnant bridges the old covenant faithfulness with the new covenant reality centered in Christ, highlighting that salvation has always rested on God's electing love rather than human numbers or effort.

Key Passages

A Remnant Shall Return

Isaiah 10:20-23

Isaiah prophesies that though judgment comes, a faithful remnant will survive and return - God always preserves a people for Himself.

Isaiah prophesies that a remnant of Israel will return and rely on the Lord in truth.

A20nd it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. 22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. 23 For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

God Has Not Cast Away His People

Romans 9:27-29

Paul assures that God has not rejected Israel - even in the present age, a remnant chosen by grace remains faithful.

Paul quotes Isaiah to show that only a remnant of Israel will be saved, yet God's word has not failed.

E27saias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.

A Remnant According to Grace

Romans 11:1-6

Paul reveals that the remnant exists by grace, not merit - God's preservation of His people is always an act of undeserved favor.

As in Elijah's day when 7,000 had not bowed to Baal, so now there is a remnant chosen by grace.

I1 say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Did You Know?

1

In every generation God preserves a faithful few. Noah, Lot, the 7000 who had not bowed to Baal, the exiles who returned, the twelve disciples, the 120 in the upper room.

2

The remnant is not a sign of God's failure. It is a sign of His mercy. He could start over with one righteous person and still keep every promise He has made.

3

Elijah thought he was the only one left. God told him there were 7000 who had not bowed the knee. We are rarely as alone as we feel. God always has His hidden ones.
