The Wilderness

Illustration of The Wilderness

The wilderness emerges in Scripture as a realm of profound testing and divine provision, where God's people learn to rely wholly upon him for sustenance amid desolation. Israel's prolonged sojourn there, marked by the daily gift of manna yet culminating in exclusion from the promised land owing to unbelief, underscores the peril of faithlessness in the redemptive journey. By contrast, Christ's forty days of temptation in that same setting reveals perfect obedience, transforming the wilderness from a place of failure into one of victorious preparation for the salvation of humanity.

Key Passages

Manna in the Wilderness

Exodus 16:4-15

God feeds Israel daily in the desert - teaching dependence, testing faithfulness, and providing exactly what is needed for each day's journey.

God provides daily bread from heaven for Israel in the wilderness, teaching them to depend on Him alone.

T4hen said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

5 And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. 6 And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt: 7 And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us? 8 And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD. 9 And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings. 10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God. 13 And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host. 14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

Jesus Tempted Forty Days

Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus relives Israel's wilderness experience but succeeds where they failed - overcoming every temptation through Scripture and obedience to the Father.

Jesus relives Israel's wilderness experience but overcomes every temptation, quoting Deuteronomy each time.

T1hen was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

They Could Not Enter Because of Unbelief

Hebrews 3:7-19

Hebrews warns that Israel's wilderness generation failed through unbelief - their example serves as a cautionary tale for every subsequent generation.

The author warns believers not to repeat Israel's wilderness failure of hardening their hearts in unbelief.

W7herefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; 15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. 16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. 17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Did You Know?

1

The wilderness is where God strips away every human crutch. Israel had no farms, no markets, no armies. Only manna, only water from the rock, only the pillar of cloud and fire.

2

Jesus was driven into the wilderness immediately after His baptism. Before the public ministry came the private testing. Victory in the desert preceded victory at the cross.

3

Many of us discover God most clearly when everything else is stripped away. The wilderness is not punishment. It is the place where we learn that He alone is enough.
