Struggling with Doubt

Struggling with Doubt

Doubt can feel like a shameful secret for a person of faith, but Scripture shows that even the greatest believers wrestled with questions. Thomas doubted the resurrection; John the Baptist questioned Jesus from prison; the psalmists cried out 'How long, O Lord?' God does not reject honest questions โ€” He meets them with patience and revelation. These passages encourage you to bring your doubts into the light rather than hiding them, trusting that genuine seeking leads to deeper faith.

Key Passages

Lord, I Believe; Help My Unbelief

Mark 9:23-24

This father's honest cry models how faith and doubt can coexist - bringing our unbelief to Jesus rather than hiding it is itself an act of faith.

J23esus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Thomas Sees and Believes

John 20:26-29

Jesus meets Thomas in his doubt and invites him to touch the wounds. Honest questions are welcomed by the risen Lord.

A26nd after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Faith Is the Substance of Things Hoped For

Hebrews 11:1-3

Faith is confident assurance in what we cannot yet see. It is the conviction that God keeps his word.

N1ow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Ask in Faith

James 1:5-8

Doubt that refuses to trust God undermines prayer. Asking with single-minded trust opens the door to receiving wisdom from above.

I5f any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

The Heavens Declare God's Glory

Psalms 19:1-6

Creation itself testifies to God's existence and power. When faith wavers, the world around us points back to the Creator.

T1he heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Did You Know?

1

Doubt is not the opposite of faith. Unbelief is. Doubt is faith that is struggling, questioning, and still looking toward God. The father who cried "I believe, help my unbelief" was answered by Jesus.

2

Thomas was not excluded for his doubt. Jesus met him in it. The risen Lord invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Honest doubt is met with honest evidence.

3

The opposite of doubt is not certainty. It is trust that holds on even when certainty is lacking. Faith is not the absence of questions. It is the presence of a Person we trust.
