Heaven

Heaven

Heaven is depicted throughout Scripture as the eternal dwelling place of God, where His glory and presence are fully revealed, from Old Testament visions of the divine throne to New Testament portrayals of the heavenly city. After humanity's fall introduced sin and separation, God promised redemption through Christ, making heaven the ultimate destination for believers who are welcomed into eternal fellowship by grace. This theme holds profound significance as it offers hope amid suffering, assures victory over death, and calls followers to live with an eternal perspective rooted in passages such as John 14 and Revelation 21.

Key Passages

In my Father's house are many mansions

John 14:1-4

Jesus comforts His disciples with the promise of prepared dwelling places - heaven is not an abstract concept but a personal home prepared by Christ Himself.

L1et not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Fatherโ€™s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

A new heaven and a new earth

Revelation 21:1-5

John's vision reveals that God's plan is not escape from creation but its renewal - a restored universe where God dwells permanently with His people.

A1nd I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Absent from the body, present with the Lord

2 Corinthians 5:6-9

Paul expresses confidence that death immediately ushers believers into Christ's presence - removing fear of the transition between this life and the next.

T6herefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

Eye has not seen what God has prepared

1 Corinthians 2:9-10

Paul quotes Isaiah to emphasize that heaven exceeds all human imagination - our greatest dreams fall short of what God has planned for those who love Him.

B9ut as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Our citizenship is in heaven

Philippians 3:20-21

Paul reminds believers that their true homeland is heaven - reframing earthly life as temporary residence while awaiting the Savior's return.

F20or our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
