Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son, as affirmed in New Testament passages such as Matthew 28:19 and 2 Corinthians 13:14. Following Jesus' promise in John 14-16, the Spirit was poured out at Pentecost in Acts 2, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies like Joel 2:28-29 and empowering the apostles with visible signs and spiritual gifts to launch the church's mission. This same Spirit now indwells believers at conversion, providing ongoing conviction of sin, empowerment for ministry, and guidance into truth as seen throughout the epistles. Its significance rests in enabling the new covenant community to experience God's presence and continue Christ's work until his return.

The Spirit will guide you into all truth

John 16:13-15

Jesus promises that the Spirit's primary ministry is illumination - leading believers into deeper understanding of truth they could not grasp on their own.

H13owbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christโ€™s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

The Spirit poured out at Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4

The Spirit's dramatic arrival fulfills Joel's prophecy and empowers the church for mission - tongues of fire and bold proclamation mark the birthday of the church.

A1nd when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Paul's stunning declaration that individual believers are God's temple transforms how we view our bodies - they are sacred spaces indwelt by the living God.

W19hat? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Godโ€™s.

The Spirit helps our weakness in prayer

Romans 8:26-28

Paul reveals that the Spirit intercedes when we don't know how to pray - our inarticulate groans are translated into perfect petitions by God Himself.

L26ikewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
