Marriage

Marriage

Marriage in the Bible originates in Genesis with God's creation of Eve as a companion for Adam, establishing the first human union as a divine institution rather than a human invention. This sacred covenant between husband and wife is presented as a lifelong commitment of faithfulness and mutual self-giving, mirroring Christ's sacrificial love for the church as taught in Ephesians 5. It matters because it forms the foundation for family, procreation, and social order while illustrating God's covenantal relationship with His people across both Old and New Testaments. Scripture consistently upholds marriage as honorable, warns against its dissolution, and employs it as a key metaphor for spiritual fidelity and redemption.

Key Passages

A man shall leave and cleave to his wife

Genesis 2:22-24

God establishes marriage at creation as a one-flesh union requiring both separation from parents and permanent bonding - the foundational institution of human society.

A22nd the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church

Ephesians 5:25-33

Paul elevates marriage to a picture of Christ's sacrificial love for His people - making every marriage a living parable of the gospel.

H25usbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Two are better than one

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Solomon observes the practical wisdom of partnership - mutual support, warmth, and defense make companionship not just pleasant but essential for flourishing.

T9wo are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Love is strong as death

Song of Solomon 8:6-7

Song of Solomon celebrates romantic love as a force as powerful and unyielding as death itself - a divine gift that reflects God's own passionate commitment.

S6et me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

What God has joined together

Matthew 19:4-6

Jesus affirms marriage's divine origin and permanence - what God unites, humans should not separate, grounding marital commitment in God's creative act.

A4nd he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
