Achan
Achan was an Israelite from the tribe of Judah who violated God's explicit command after the conquest of Jericho by secretly taking a Babylonian robe, silver, and gold that were to be devoted to the Lord or destroyed. This act of disobedience brought divine judgment on the entire nation, resulting in Israel's unexpected defeat at Ai with the loss of about thirty-six lives and widespread demoralization. Through Joshua's inquiry and the casting of lots, Achan was identified, confessed, and executed by stoning along with his family and possessions, underscoring the seriousness of sin's communal impact and the need for holiness to secure future victories in the conquest of Canaan.

Achan is identified as "Achar" in 1 Chronicles 2:7, a deliberate name change from the Hebrew root for "trouble" that underscores his role in bringing military defeat on Israel.
The specific plunder Achan concealed. A Shinar robe, 200 shekels of silver, and a 50-shekel wedge of gold. Reflects established Late Bronze Age trade routes linking Canaan with Mesopotamia.
Discovery of the culprit occurred through successive lot-casting that narrowed from tribe to clan to household to individual, an early Israelite judicial procedure akin to Urim-and-Thummim consultation.
Corporate punishment extended to Achanโs sons, daughters, livestock, and tent, illustrating ancient Near Eastern notions of familial solidarity rather than individual culpability alone.
The execution site, the Valley of Achor, is later invoked in Hosea 2:15 as a future "door of hope," transforming the location of judgment into a symbol of covenant renewal.
