Levi

Portrait of Levi

Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah whose descendants formed one of the twelve tribes of Israel. After the tribe demonstrated loyalty to God by siding with Moses during the golden calf rebellion, they were set apart from the other tribes and assigned the priesthood along with duties caring for the tabernacle and later the temple. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no territorial inheritance but were instead given forty-eight cities and supported by tithes, reflecting their unique role as mediators of worship and sacrifice. This arrangement underscored the biblical emphasis on holiness, covenant faithfulness, and the centralized system of Israelite religious life recorded in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy.

Did You Know?

1

Levi joined his brother Simeon in slaughtering the men of Shechem to avenge their sister Dinah, an act that led Jacob to prophesy their descendants would be scattered in Israel. A curse transformed when the Levites received no land allotment but instead were dispersed as priests and temple servants.

2

During the golden calf rebellion at Sinai, the Levites alone rallied to Moses and killed roughly three thousand idolaters, earning their permanent consecration to sanctuary service in place of the firstborn sons from all tribes.

3

The tribe received forty-eight cities scattered across Canaan, including the six cities of refuge, rather than a contiguous territory, ensuring their availability to teach the law and perform rituals throughout the nation.

4

Levi's three sons. Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Headed clans assigned distinct tabernacle duties, such as carrying the ark, curtains, and frames, with strict protocols that prevented any other group from touching the holy objects under penalty of death.

5

Although Aaron's line alone held the high priesthood, non-Aaronic Levites served as musicians, gatekeepers, and assistants in the Second Temple, a division of labor rooted in David's reorganization that persisted into the New Testament era.

Key Passages

Levi Avenges Dinah

Genesis 34:25-31

This passage shows how Levi's fierce loyalty, though flawed by violence, reveals a zeal God would later redeem for holy priestly service.

A25nd it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinahโ€™s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechemโ€™s house, and went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, 29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house. 30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. 31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

Jacob's Prophecy About Levi

Genesis 49:5-7

This prophecy shows how God can redeem even a violent past, turning Leviโ€™s descendants into faithful priests who serve Him.

S5imeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

The Levites Set Apart

Numbers 3:5-13

God sets the Levites apart for sacred service in place of Israel's firstborn, showing His loving order and care for worship.

A5nd the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priestโ€™s office: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 12 And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine; 13 Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the LORD.
