Phinehas
Phinehas was the grandson of Aaron the high priest who served during Israel's time in the wilderness. In Numbers 25, when the people committed idolatry and immorality with Moabite and Midianite women, provoking a plague that killed twenty-four thousand Israelites, Phinehas speared an Israelite man and his Midianite consort through the body, publicly halting the sin. God credited this act of zeal for his holiness with turning away the divine wrath and granted Phinehas an everlasting covenant of peace and perpetual priesthood for his descendants. The episode is later cited in Scripture, including Psalm 106, as a model of fidelity that preserved Israel's covenant relationship with God.

Family
Did You Know?
Phinehas bore an Egyptian-derived name meaning "the Nubian," highlighting possible cultural influences on Aaron's family from their generations in Egypt before the Exodus.
In Psalm 106:30-31 his intervention is explicitly credited as righteousness "to all generations," using the same phrasing applied to Abraham's faith in Genesis 15.
Beyond the Baal Peor incident, Phinehas accompanied the Israelite army into battle against Midian carrying the sanctuary vessels and trumpets, functioning as both priest and military leader (Numbers 31:6).
His confrontation with the eastern tribes at the altar of witness (Joshua 22) is the only recorded instance of a priest negotiating to prevent civil war, resulting in the altar being named "Witness" to affirm shared worship of Yahweh.
Phinehas's covenant of perpetual priesthood (Numbers 25:13) is later referenced in 1 Chronicles 9:20 as granting his descendants ongoing oversight of the tabernacle gatekeepers, a role distinct from the high priestly line that eventually passed to other branches.
