Satan / The Devil

Portrait of Satan / The Devil

In Scripture, Satan is depicted as a once-high angelic being who rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven along with other rebellious angels. As the adversary, he tempts humanity into sin, as seen in the Garden of Eden with Eve and in the wilderness with Jesus, while also accusing believers before God, exemplified in the book of Job. This portrayal matters because it provides the biblical explanation for the presence of evil and suffering in the world, highlighting the cosmic spiritual conflict between God and forces of darkness. Ultimately, Satan's defeat through Christ's death and resurrection offers hope and victory to humanity, culminating in his final judgment as described in Revelation.

Did You Know?

1

In the Book of Job, "the satan" functions as a title for an angelic being who serves as an accuser within God's divine council, testing human loyalty rather than embodying pure evil.

2

The New Testament's identification of the serpent with Satan appears only in Revelation 12:9 and 20:2, centuries after Genesis was written.

3

Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28, often linked to Satan's fall, originally addressed the kings of Babylon and Tyre respectively, with their imagery later applied to the devil in Christian tradition.

4

The Greek term "diabolos" translates the Hebrew "satan" and emphasizes his role as a slanderer or false accuser in the New Testament.

5

In 2 Corinthians 11:14, Paul warns that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, drawing on Jewish traditions about deceptive spirits.

Satan Tests Job

Job 1:6-12

This passage shows that even fierce trials come only by God's permission, inviting us to trust His wise and loving control.

N6ow there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? 9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. 12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

Temptation of Jesus

Matthew 4:1-11

This passage shows Jesus defeating Satan's temptations with Scripture, modeling how we too can resist the enemy and stay faithful to God.

T1hen was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

The Dragon Cast Down

Revelation 12:7-12

This passage shows that Christ's victory has already defeated Satan, giving believers lasting hope and strength to overcome him.

A7nd there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
