Sin & Temptation

Sin & Temptation

The Bible teaches that sin entered the world through Adam and Eve's disobedience, separating humanity from God. Temptation is a common experience, but God provides a way of escape through His Spirit and Word. Believers are called to resist sin, confess it, and rely on Christ's atonement for forgiveness. Ultimately, sin leads to death, but through faith in Jesus, victory over sin and temptation is possible.

The Fall of Man

Genesis 3:1-6

This passage shows the serpent tempting Eve with the forbidden fruit, resulting in the first human sin against God.

N1ow the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

David's Confession

Psalms 51:1-5

David acknowledges his sin and iniquity before God, recognizing that he was born in sin from conception.

H1ave mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Process of Temptation

James 1:13-15

James explains that temptation arises from one's own lust, which when conceived brings forth sin and ultimately death.

L13et no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

God's Way of Escape

1 Corinthians 10:13

Paul assures believers that God is faithful and will not allow temptation beyond what they can bear, providing a way to escape.

T13here hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Wages of Sin

Romans 6:23

This verse contrasts the deadly outcome of sin with the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

F23or the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
