Great Catch of Fish

Illustration of Great Catch of Fish

In the Gospel of Luke, Simon Peter and his partners had fished all night on the Sea of Galilee without success. At Jesus' command to lower the nets again in deep water, the resulting catch was so abundant that the nets began to tear and both boats started to sink under the weight. Peter responded by falling at Jesus' knees and acknowledging his own sinfulness, after which Jesus declared that the fishermen would now catch people instead. This event demonstrated Jesus' authority and directly led to the calling of Peter, James, and John as his first disciples.

The Miracle

Luke 5:4-7

N4ow when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
