James (Son of Zebedee)
James, son of Zebedee, was one of the first apostles called by Jesus while fishing on the Sea of Galilee, along with his brother John, and he belonged to the inner circle of three disciples who witnessed the Transfiguration and other pivotal events. In the early church he emerged as a leader among the apostles in Jerusalem. His execution by sword under Herod Agrippa I, recorded in Acts 12:2, made him the first apostle martyred for his faith. This event illustrates the cost of discipleship foretold by Jesus and marks the onset of organized persecution that scattered believers yet advanced the spread of the Gospel.

Did You Know?
James and his brother John received the nickname "Boanerges," or "Sons of Thunder," from Jesus, a title preserved only in Mark 3:17 and likely alluding to their impulsive zeal, such as when they sought permission to summon fire from heaven on a Samaritan village.
James belonged to Jesus' innermost circle of three disciples, uniquely witnessing both the raising of Jairus' daughter and the Transfiguration alongside Peter and John, events recorded across the Synoptic Gospels.
The first apostle to suffer martyrdom, James was beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa I around 44 AD, an event noted in Acts 12:2 that prompted the early church to scatter and intensified Roman-era persecution of Christian leaders.
James' mother, possibly identified with Salome among the women at the cross, boldly petitioned Jesus to grant her sons seats at his right and left in the coming kingdom, revealing the competitive ambitions within apostolic families as described in Matthew 20:20-21.
Prior to his call, James fished in partnership with Simon Peter on the Sea of Galilee, and their catch was so abundant after Jesus' instruction that the boats began to sink, underscoring the economic sacrifice of leaving their trade immediately.
