Grace

Grace

In the Bible, grace refers to God's unmerited favor extended to humanity despite their sinfulness and inability to earn salvation. This concept is vividly demonstrated through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for sin so that forgiveness could be offered freely. The significance of grace is highlighted in passages like Ephesians 2:8-9, which states that salvation is a gift from God not based on works, preventing anyone from boasting. Understanding grace matters because it transforms the relationship between God and people, emphasizing faith and humility over legalistic efforts to achieve righteousness.

Grace upon grace from Christ's fullness

John 1:14-17

John describes believers receiving wave after wave of grace from Christ's inexhaustible fullness - grace is not a one-time event but an ongoing overflow.

A14nd the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

My grace is sufficient for you

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

God tells Paul that divine power is perfected in human weakness - transforming our inadequacies from liabilities into showcases for God's strength.

A7nd lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christโ€™s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Saved by grace, not works

Ephesians 2:4-9

Paul emphasizes that even faith itself is God's gift - salvation is entirely grace from start to finish, leaving no room for human contribution or pride.

B4ut God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Grace that teaches us to live godly

Titus 2:11-14

Paul reveals that grace is not merely forgiveness but a teacher - training believers to say no to ungodliness and yes to self-controlled, upright living.

F11or the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Where sin abounded, grace abounded more

Romans 5:20-21

Paul declares that grace always outpaces sin - no matter how deep the offense, God's grace goes deeper still, ensuring sin never has the final word.

M20oreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Did You Know?

1

Grace is not a New Testament invention. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Abraham was justified by grace. The Old Testament is full of unmerited favor given to undeserving people.

2

Grace is not merely forgiveness. It is the active, transforming power of God at work in the lives of those who cannot help themselves. Grace does not leave us where it found us.

3

Grace is not cheap. It cost God His Son. The cross is the measure of grace. When we understand what it cost, we understand why grace must never be treated as a license to sin.
