Abiathar
Abiathar was the son of Ahimelech the priest and the sole survivor of the massacre at Nob, where King Saul ordered the execution of eighty-five priests for allegedly aiding David's escape. Fleeing with the ephod used for divine consultation, Abiathar joined David's band of fugitives and became his trusted priest throughout the years of exile and later during David's reign in Jerusalem. He served alongside Zadok as one of two chief priests, carrying the Ark of the Covenant and inquiring of God on David's behalf during critical moments including Absalom's rebellion, when he helped relay intelligence from Jerusalem to David in the wilderness. Abiathar's loyalty to David spanned decades of hardship and triumph, making him one of the king's most faithful companions. However, near the end of David's life, Abiathar supported Adonijah's premature claim to the throne rather than Solomon, whom God had chosen as successor. After Solomon's accession, Abiathar was stripped of his priestly office and banished to his estate in Anathoth, fulfilling the ancient prophecy against the house of Eli. His story illustrates themes of loyalty, divine providence in preserving the priesthood, and the consequences of misplaced political allegiance.
