Malachi
Malachi served as the final prophet of the Old Testament in the mid-fifth century BCE, after the Jewish exiles had returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the temple. He delivered oracles that sharply rebuked both priests and people for corrupt worship, including the offering of defective sacrifices, neglect of tithes, and intermarriage with pagans that violated the covenant. His prophecy also announced that God would send Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord to restore hearts and prepare the way for the Messiahโs coming judgment and blessing. This book therefore closes the Old Testament canon by linking covenant faithfulness with the expectation of New Testament fulfillment in John the Baptist and Jesus.

Did You Know?
Malachi's name literally translates to "my messenger" in Hebrew, leading scholars to debate whether it is the prophet's actual name or a descriptive title derived from Malachi 3:1.
The final verse of Malachi warns that God will strike the land with a curse if Elijah's message is not heeded, making it the only Old Testament book to conclude on such a note of judgment.
In addressing corrupt worship, Malachi highlights how priests were offering blemished animals in sacrifice, violating the standards set in Leviticus for acceptable offerings to God.
Malachi 4:2 promises that the "sun of righteousness" will rise with healing in its wings, a metaphor drawing from ancient Near Eastern imagery of winged solar deities but applied uniquely to Yahweh's coming justice.
The prophet condemns the practice of men divorcing their Israelite wives to marry foreign women, linking this social issue directly to the covenant unfaithfulness that delayed God's blessings.
