Amnon
Amnon was the firstborn son of King David by Ahinoam the Jezreelite. He raped his half-sister Tamar after luring her to his quarters under false pretenses of illness, then rejected her and sent her away in disgrace. Two years later Tamarโs full brother Absalom murdered Amnon at a sheep-shearing feast in Baal Hazor, carrying out long-planned revenge. The episode, narrated in 2 Samuel 13, illustrates the outworking of Nathanโs prophecy that the sword would never depart from Davidโs house and demonstrates how one act of sexual violence triggered cycles of retaliation that destabilized the royal family.

Did You Know?
Amnon consulted his shrewd cousin Jonadab, son of David's brother Shimeah, whose detailed scheme to feign illness and request Tamar's care exploited ancient expectations of familial duty to gain private access.
After the assault, Amnon immediately ordered Tamar removed by a servant, a public shaming that disregarded Near Eastern customs requiring a violator to either marry or compensate the victim and her family.
As firstborn son and presumptive heir during the early United Monarchy, Amnon received no recorded punishment from David, highlighting the fragile legal structures before the full codification of Deuteronomic kingship laws.
Absalom delayed his revenge for exactly two years, using the intervening time to acquire property at Baal Hazor and host a royal sheep-shearing feast that masked the planned assassination.
Amnon was slain while intoxicated at the feast, when Absalom's servants struck him on command, an act that initiated the chain of events leading to Absalom's own rebellion against David.
