Eli

Portrait of Eli

Eli served as high priest and judge of Israel at the tabernacle in Shiloh, overseeing worship during the closing years of the judges period. He mentored the young Samuel after Hannah dedicated her son to lifelong service at the sanctuary, instructing him in priestly duties until Samuel received his first prophetic call. Eliโ€™s failure to restrain his corrupt sons Hophni and Phinehas provoked divine judgment, announced first through Samuel, that resulted in the deaths of Eli and his sons, the capture of the ark, and the end of his priestly line. This narrative highlights the consequences of negligent spiritual leadership and marks the transition from the old priestly order to the prophetic ministry of Samuel.

Did You Know?

1

Eli mistook the barren Hannah's silent, fervent prayer for drunkenness because her lips moved without audible words, an unusual practice that contrasted with typical vocalized petitions at the Shiloh tabernacle.

2

Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas violated sacrificial laws by seizing raw portions of meat before the fat was offered to God and by coercing sexual relations with women serving at the tabernacle entrance.

3

At age 98 and after judging Israel for 40 years, Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate upon hearing of the Ark's capture, breaking his neck and dying instantly.

4

The judgment oracle delivered to young Samuel declared that Eli's descendants would forever be barred from effective priesthood and would die young, a curse triggered by his refusal to curb his sons' abuses of office.

5

Eli oversaw the tabernacle at Shiloh during its final era as Israel's central sanctuary, where the lamp of God still burned nightly until the divine presence symbolically withdrew with the Ark's loss to the Philistines.

Key Passages

Eli and Hannah

1 Samuel 1:12-18

This passage shows how patient understanding can transform misunderstanding into blessing, affirming that God hears sincere prayers others may misjudge.

A12nd it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. 14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. 16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. 18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

God Calls Samuel

1 Samuel 3:1-18

This passage shows how even imperfect leaders like Eli can humbly guide young hearts to recognize and respond to God's voice.

A1nd the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. 11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eliโ€™s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. 15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. 16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. 17 And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. 18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

Death of Eli

1 Samuel 4:12-18

Eli's tragic death shows how neglecting to honor God and guide our families can bring deep sorrow and loss.

A12nd there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
