Zechariah (Prophet)

Portrait of Zechariah (Prophet)

Zechariah was a post-exilic Hebrew prophet active in the late sixth century BC who ministered to the Jewish remnant that had returned from Babylonian captivity. Alongside Haggai, he urged the rebuilding of the ruined Jerusalem temple by conveying eight night visions that depicted Godโ€™s sovereign protection, the removal of sin, and the future glory of His kingdom under a messianic ruler. These oracles stressed repentance and covenant faithfulness while foretelling events such as a humble king entering Jerusalem and the outpouring of the Spirit, themes later cited in the New Testament. The book bearing his name thus bridges post-exilic restoration hopes with enduring scriptural promises of divine redemption and eschatological fulfillment.

Did You Know?

1

Zechariah was actually the grandson of the priest Iddo who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel, a detail that explains his priestly perspective and access to temple rituals during the reconstruction period.

2

His eight night visions, all received in one evening, feature unique symbols such as a woman named Wickedness confined in an ephah basket carried by stork-winged women to Shinar, reflecting Persian-era concerns over idolatry and exile.

3

The phrase 'not by might nor by power but by my Spirit' comes from Zechariah's vision of the olive trees feeding a golden lampstand, directly tying divine empowerment to the practical task of temple building under Persian rule.

4

Zechariah chapters 9-14 contain the earliest biblical references to a future pierced messianic figure and a fountain for cleansing sin, motifs later echoed in New Testament passion narratives.

5

As both prophet and priest, Zechariah's ministry overlapped with but extended years beyond Haggai's, continuing into the reign of Artaxerxes and addressing post-temple issues like ritual purity and Gentile inclusion in God's kingdom.

Key Passages

Vision of the Lampstand

Zechariah 4:1-10

This vision shows that God's Spirit, not human strength, empowers His people to finish His good work.

A1nd the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,

2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: 3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. 7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. 10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

The Coming King

Zechariah 9:9-10

This prophecy reveals God's promise of a humble King who brings lasting peace and salvation to all nations.

R9ejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

Pierced One

Zechariah 12:10

This prophecy shows how God's Spirit opens hearts to mourn the pierced Messiah, drawing us into repentance and grace.

A10nd I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
