Ananias (husband of Sapphira)

Portrait of Ananias (husband of Sapphira)

Ananias was a member of the early Jerusalem church who, together with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property yet secretly kept back part of the proceeds while presenting the remainder as the full amount given to the apostles. Confronted by Peter, he was accused of lying not to people but to the Holy Spirit and immediately fell dead at the apostleโ€™s feet; his wife later met the same fate after confirming the deception. The account in Acts 5 illustrates the high standard of integrity expected in the fledgling Christian community and demonstrates both the reality of divine judgment and the power of the Holy Spirit to expose hypocrisy, producing widespread fear that reinforced the churchโ€™s moral seriousness.

Did You Know?

1

Ananias's deception took place right after Barnabas's full donation of sale proceeds in Acts 4, creating an intentional narrative contrast between genuine generosity and calculated hypocrisy in the early Jerusalem church.

2

The Greek verb nosphizomai used in Acts 5:2 for "keeping back" part of the proceeds also appears in Titus 2:10 to describe embezzlement, framing Ananias's act as theft from the Spirit-indwelt community rather than a private financial decision.

3

Peter explicitly notes that the property and its proceeds remained under Ananias's control until sold, underscoring that the early church's sharing was voluntary and that the sin lay in lying about the amount rather than in retaining personal assets.

4

Ananias died instantly at Peter's feet with no recorded mourning, funeral rites, or family intervention, after which young men immediately wrapped and buried the body outside the city, reflecting both the abrupt judgment and the communal priority of preserving purity.

5

The incident produced widespread fear that extended beyond the church to outsiders who heard of it, marking one of the few New Testament cases of immediate divine physical judgment tied directly to an offense against the Holy Spirit.

Key Passages

Ananias Lies and Dies

Acts 5:1-6

This passage reminds us that God deeply values honesty and wholehearted trust, urging us to live with sincere integrity in our walk with Him.

B1ut a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostlesโ€™ feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
