Jeremiah

Portrait of Jeremiah

Jeremiah was an Old Testament prophet active in Judah during the late seventh and early sixth centuries BC, called by God to confront the nationโ€™s persistent idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness. He repeatedly warned that Jerusalem and the temple would be destroyed by Babylon as divine judgment, a message that led to his persecution, imprisonment, and public rejection. Amid these oracles of doom, Jeremiah also announced the promise of a new covenant in which God would forgive sins and write his law on the hearts of his people rather than on tablets of stone. This prophecy is cited in the New Testament as foundational to the redemptive work of Christ and the inauguration of the church under the new covenant.

Key Passages

Jeremiah's Call

Jeremiah 1:4-10

God tells Jeremiah He knew him before birth and appointed him as prophet to the nations - revealing that divine calling precedes human existence and that God equips those He sends.

T4hen the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. 6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. 7 But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. 8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. 9 Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. 10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

The New Covenant

Jeremiah 31:31-34

Jeremiah's prophecy of a covenant written on hearts rather than stone tablets is the Old Testament's clearest anticipation of the gospel - internal transformation replacing external law.

B31ehold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
